I have been a Nevil Shute fan for more than 30 years, and IN THE WET was one of his many novels I'd not read. Well, now I have - mostly (I skimmed a lot) - and it was something of a disappointment. Even Shute's most famous book, ON THE BEACH, is a speculative look at the future, and so too is this one, but it's a bit quirkier, in that it also deals with the idea of reincarnation. An elderly clergyman stationed in the Australian bush is called to the bedside of a dying derelict. In his delirium Stevie tells a story of England in through the medium of a squadron air pilot in the service of Queen Elizabeth II. In the typical way of Nevil Shute this tale built steadily on the plot and became more and more gripping. I found the. story and the characters utterly believable and was right there with them. Even though I knew the book already, I found it hard to put this down. Nevil Shute is such a skilled storyteller - he never fails.
